Diego is a bright, kind-hearted, curious, smart and caring adolescent of 14 years of age, is an only child. Diego loves learning, enjoys sport, adores playing with his dog, Dolly and enjoy playing video games. He is enrolled on a French immersion program, and speaks French, English, and Spanish fluently. He plays Soccer, one of his favorite sports, and basketball.
He was diagnosed in November with stage 4 Nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Problems started manifesting back in April this year. Doctor was consulted and thought this might just be a sinus problem (due to the spring allergy season) But with time the problem persisted. By the summer, Diego had a hard time breathing through his nose. By end of August, he started having problem with his jaw and difficulty eating. He was referred to a dentist, orthodontist, and jaw specialist. He finally got a CT scan (Computed tomography) order which shown a large tumour in the nasal cavity. Diego was rushed to Stollery Children's hospital in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
The treatment plan administrated by The Oncologist Team to Diego started mid- November and it is showing a positive result; However, the fight and healing just started. The treatment will be followed by radiotherapy and additional chemotherapy to be administered in Jacksonville, Florida. The Oncologist team have chosen this facility due to its proton radiotherapy equipment, ensuring precise treatment of the affected area without harming healthy tissue. However, this entails increase expenses for a seven-week stay, where he will receive daily treatment.
His mom (Maria) has been taking time off from work to care for him. His dad (Hugo) just started his new job. Those who know his family know they are extremely hard working and would never ask for help.
They have been fortunate to receive emotional support from dear friends and relatives from the United State. However, they do not have relatives in Canada.
If you can help at all, you Support and generosity during this challenging time would be greatly appreciated
